“God Bless the One I Love” By Night Lunch

Montreal Band Night Lunch makes music that is described as anachronistic atop arrangements rooted in early R&B, soul, AM gold and new wave. This week, the band introduce their new single “God Bless the One I Love”, the lead single for their forthcoming sophomore full-length, Fire in the Rose Garden, out October 20th, 2023 via Mothland (Yoo doo Right, Kristian North).

Fire in the Rose Garden is our most collaborative project to date. A fun and weird album that will make you dance and cry at the same time. It is designed to act as a refuge from the harsh realities of life, if only temporarily, and to surrender to the joyful act of listening to a good song. Some songs come from deep personal feelings, and some are purely fantasy/fiction.

I wanted to make it look like Marlee was in a heavenly world up in the mountains that slowly evolves into a storm. I built a little wilderness set with big cotton clouds, plastic flowers and real ones. I rotoscoped some animals, and mixed it with some altered found-footage from a weird relaxation VHS tape I found. It contains subliminal messages for couples to have better sex at home. For Luke, we went for the preacher vibe, which balances Marlee’s angelic mood. I used a big fan to create a windstorm, which rips the set to pieces as the band gently sways to the music. We shot all the footage at Théâtre Outremont.
