“Fremantle Girls” By Fascinator

Multi-disciplinary artist, producer, composer, and frontman of Children Collide, Johnny Mackay’s solo work as Fascinator has seen him tour the world with Tame Impala, The Avalanches, Jagwar Ma and Pond and release two full-length records; 2016’s Man and 2018’s Water Sign.

Fascinator AKA: Johnny Mackay recently shared single “Love Is Coming,” off his forthcoming record. Speaking on Fremantle – the root of inspiration for the track – Mackay shares; “Fremantle was the first place my grandfather landed when he immigrated from Scotland. A remote and heavenly paradise to him and countless others. But a mere two generations later I found myself at the cold-blooded mercy of it’s double-edged sword. Fremantle herself wielding the ivory handle, slashing me from North and South with consecutive breaks to the heart by one love-of-my-life after the other. It’s been years now and I’ve all but recovered. However, on occasion, when the moon is empty and the night is still I can hear the maniacal whispers of quokkas and sandgropers mocking my lovelorn soul as the doctor blows salt eastward off the Indian Ocean over the Australian desert straight into my misty eyeballs.”

On the track’s lyrics and themes, he continues; “Fremantle Girls is about two significant and heartbreaking relationships I had in a row with people from a little West Australian town called Fremantle. Listening back now I can hear sad Beach Boys and Beatles in there but I’m pretty sure all we were listening to was Eden’s Island by Eden Ahbez which is why we made sure to include the frog guiro and whip crack. This one also has the biggest cast including two couples on backing vocals.”

The lights are coming up once again on Johnny Mackay’s solo project, Fascinator, with a newly announced studio album titled Lovesongs. On this latest arrangement, Mackay exchanges sitar loops and rainbow beats for the gentle strumming of acoustic guitar and a diary of heartache. He lays bare his deepest id for all to see; a world-weary romantic with a tender naivety that repeatedly leaves him blindsided by love. Inviting his NYC friends into the studio to help realize the project, the record features production and instrumentation from Loren Humphrey (Florence & The Machine, Lana Del Rey, Arctic Monkeys)
