Tongue was recorded near the small town of Palaia in Italy’s Tuscany region, in a makeshift attic studio on a 16th Century Tuscan villa this past April. As America dealt with a dystopian spring, Brian Allen Simon decamped overseas to attempt to find something pure and ostensibly forgotten — something capable of reaching deep into our DNA coding. Hints of John Cage and Steve Reich suffuse his deft manipulation of space, time, tension, and mood. It’s many things — a jazz album, an electronic album, an ambient album, a modern classical album, an agnostic spiritual exploration.
