Pre Pleasure

Julia Jacklin

Pre pleasure is an interesting place. Where we are stuck in our heads, weighing the costs or the consequences of our actions, afraid just to live, though living truly does give us pleasure, when we finally take the plunge. Julia Jacklin, an indie folk/pop artist from Sydney, Australia, who has made her rounds touring the world and creating fans for herself, has just come out with an understated but emotional record of ten songs, called Pre Pleasure, that deals with questions like, what if our parents weren’t strangers, will falling in love lessen life’s pains, and can we find the people who will care for us even in our doubts?

With a sound on this album, something like Mitski or Angel Olsen, she makes a solid entrance with her latest album into the world of women’s indie rock. Starting the album with the single, “Lydia Wears a Cross,” and dealing with sexual and religious rumination on the record, she falls firmly into the new camp of artists, like Maggie Rogers, who are looking for the divine, while not denying the sensual sides of themselves. But like Maggie Rogers and others, it is not without its intelligent, meditative side.

Like on the song, “Magic,” an almost country loper, where Julia talks about leading a lover to the bedroom, only to perform the “final act,” asking her lover if they can wait, “until I feel safe again.” The arrangements for the songs are mostly subdued, though there’s production to thrill. Like that other Australian indie rocker, Courtney Barnett, her songs feel like they are coming from a close friend, someone who understands you and isn’t afraid to ask some of the harder questions and reveal some of the more embarrassing parts of ourselves.

A particularly Barnett-flavored song, “Be Careful With Yourself,” finds Jacklin urging her friend or partner to quit smoking, stop speeding, and attend all of their doctor’s appointments, because, “I’m making plans for my future and I plan on you being in it.” The close friend feel of the record, as well as the intimate production of the record is certainly its hallmark, and has won me over as a listener and put her in the camp of indie rock women who I can’t wait for another record to come out from.
