Hayden Pedigo has quietly carved out a space for himself in the world of modern instrumental guitar, and I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away is the most refined version of his vision so far. Following Letting Go and The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored, this record marks the third part of his “Motor Trilogy,” each release featuring the surreal, vehicle-centered artwork by Jonathan Phillips that’s become its own little signature. Over time, Pedigo has built a reputation not just for his technical ability, but for his ability to create deeply evocative soundscapes without ever needing to say a word.

Instrumental albums always walk a fine line. Without lyrics to guide the listener, an artist has to rely entirely on texture, melody, and atmosphere to convey emotion. That’s a challenge Pedigo embraces throughout this album. In just 28 minutes, he builds with intentionality, never rushed but also never meandering. The restraint actually works to its advantage, pulling the listener into a focused experience, complete, but doesn’t overstay its welcome.

The album opens with Long Pond Lilly, a beautiful, understated track that eases the listener in with warm acoustic strumming. There’s a subtle undercurrent of electric guitar that gives it a bit of life with how it swells and dips. The way it crescendos and pulls back shows Pedigo’s comfort in letting songs breathe while still keeping them engaging.

All the Way Across highlights how carefully this record was produced. You can hear every individual string as it’s played, adding a layer of intimacy. Swelling background vocals give it a slightly otherworldly quality, though there’s also a faint sense of unease beneath the surface. That subtle tension comes through even more on Smoked, one of the album’s strongest moments. With its stacked layers of instruments and a mood that borders on medieval, it shows how Pedigo can shift tone without ever breaking the flow.

Throughout the record, Nathan Bieber’s string arrangements provide an added dimension, most notably on Houndstooth. The arrangement opens up midway, drawing comparisons to some of Bert Jansch’s more intricate work. Each listen seems to reveal something new, whether it’s a subtle melodic shift or a small detail buried in the mix.

Pedigo confidently puts together an album that isn’t showy or overwhelming, but it’s full of small, carefully placed choices that create an emotional arc. The record moves between moments of beauty and faint unease, inviting multiple listens to fully uncover its layers. In the end, I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away feels like Pedigo fully owning his craft.
