“Is it wrong” by Golden Suits
Fred Nicolaus, the co-founder of the band Department of Eagles and main force behind Golden Suits, has released the band’s latest single “Is It Wrong”.
Heavy on nostalgia and literary allusion, Golden Suits’ first self-titled solo album was centered around a breakup and an obsession with a book of short stories by John Cheever and Nicolaus became known for contemplative, folk-inflected music. With “Is It Wrong” Nicolaus is moving the needle towards a more dreamy pop influence and he notes, “it’s not about finessing a chord voicing anymore, it’s about taking a risk on a big chorus.” His love of Petty, Springsteen and McCartney shine through.
“Is It Wrong” was produced by Fraser McCulloch and recorded in an enormous, drafty church in Brooklyn, with Nicolaus playing most instruments himself (David Christian, who plays with Hospitality, Airwaves and Sam Cohen, filled in on drums).
