“Woolgathering” by mercury

mercury has released their new song “Woolgathering,” the follow-up to their recent single “Trying.” Stoking an opening palm-muted riff into a track that soars with feedback-oozing guitars and the howling vocals of front person Maddie Kerr, “Woolgathering” explores the mental purgatory we oftentimes live within; when life is going well, yet we can’t shake the feeling that everything could cave in at any moment. The track was mixed by Adam Hawkins (Kenny Hoopla, Flor).

“Woolgathering was written when I was feeling stuck in a state of uncertainty, like I was anxiously waiting around for something to go wrong with me or with the people I love,” says Kerr about the song. “It’s about calming myself down and trying not to overthink things when they feel okay.”

Whereas “Woolgathering” embraces both the remoteness and the warm comfort of the forest, “Trying” captures the feeling of drifting deep into the ocean in more ways than one. With a bed of whale-noise ambience that gradually transforms into crashing waves of guitars, the latter song confronts the tribulations we face as we grow older and the world around us slowly comes into focus. Endless pursuits of self-love. The suffocating weight of anxiety. Creeping doubt not only in yourself, but in the things you were taught at a young age. It’s a state of mind that can be as dark, isolating and overwhelming as the immensity of the sea; yet, as the track hurtles toward its peak, mercury finds peace in the realization that you’re never truly alone in your struggles. Even when it feels like you’re floating in the abyss.
