The Blessed Madonna shares “Fuck what u heard”
The Blessed Madonna has shared new single “Fuck what u heard,” featuring contributions from garage pioneer Todd Edwards. “Fuck what u heard” arrives as the latest in a stream of singles from the Blessed Madonna, including “Serotonin Moonbeams” with Uffie and “We Still Believe” with Jamie Principle. The track features Edwards’ original vocal alongside the lead vocal sample from Ray Hurley’s UK garage classic “What Goes Around”
Marea shared this experience of working with Todd Edwards: “It’s sort of everyone’s dream to work with Todd Edwards, right? What rational person with ears wouldn’t dream of a day with Todd the God. Well, I got more than I could have asked for. Todd’s vocal on this record came with a lesson on Todd’s signature method of microsampling and possibly the greatest hugs I’ve ever received in my life. Todd is not just a great artist, he’s a great friend and the love and admiration that I have for him, along with Big Hen from Joy Anonymous and my partner Pat Alvarez really shines through in this record. Todd’s sung section is something he wrote on the spot and I believe it is really just an earnest message in his voice to his partner. Mainly in that section, I felt it was best to let Todd say what he wanted. The doo Wop sounding vocals are Hen. Really I wanted to create things that sounded like they’d been sampled from older records and then treat them in that way in the mixing. Todd graciously showed me some of the way he cuts up samples and I tried to use those techniques in the song. Also one of the sounds that you’d believe was a synthesizer is Hen sort of beatboxing. I call him the Hen-thesizer. In the end of the track, I broke out a lot of drums traditional to dub music and experimented with them. It’s a complete collision of sounds and that’s precisely what I was aiming at.”
In recent years, The Blessed Madonna has been the vocalist on Fred again..’s lockdown anthem, “Marea (We Lost Dancing)”, and provided remixes for the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Florence & The Machine and Elton John. The Blessed Madonna hits the US for a run of underground club shows over the coming weeks. These include Detroit (TV Lounge, 28th April), Chicago (Smart Bar 29th April), San Francisco (1015 Folsothesm, 5th May) and Los Angeles (Lights Down Low, 6th May). Fans should keep their eyes peeled for some last minute announcements and appearances around those dates.
