TEKE::TEKE Debut New Single “Kala Kala”
“Kala Kala,” is the new single from TEKE::TEKE, the psychedelic/experimental collective/band from Montreal. The group is comprised of Serge Nakauchi Pelletier (Guitar), Etienne Lebel (Trombone), Ian C. Lettre (Drums), Hidetaka Yoneyama (Guitar), Yuki Isami (Flute, Synths), Mikhail Stein (Bass), and Maya Kuroki (Vocals).
“Kala Kala” (which roughly translates to “clattering”) is a perfect encapsulation of their distinctly frenzied sound and energy. Formed in 2017 for what was intended to be a one-off instrumental tribute to legendary Japanese guitarist Takeshi ‘Terry’ Terauchi featuring a Shinobue (traditional Japanese Bamboo flute), a Taisho Koto (or a Nagoya Harp) and a Trombone among Guitars, Bass, Synths, and Drums; TEKE::TEKE was so inspired that they continued on, adding the formidable talents of the vibrant, bespectacled singer, actress, and visual artist Maya Kuroki as fronterperson, while incorporating elements of shoegaze, punk, and 1960’s + ‘70s era psychedelic Japanese soundtracks into their original material; resulting in something altogether modern and undeniably theirs.
Over the past two years, The 7-piece band has been busy playing festivals throughout Canada. They released their debut EP Jikaku in 2018. “Kala Kala” was recorded and mixed by Seth Manchester (Battles, Lightning Bolt, Daughters) at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket, RI and mastered by Heba Kadry (Beach House, Björk). The self-released single is to appear on their upcoming highly anticipated debut full-length album. Stay tuned for more details!
