Smerz Unveil New EP “ALLINA”
Meet Allina: pop princess, fashion plate, and rising star, whose story we follow across her 8-track, 15-minute self-titled, debut EP written and executive produced by Norwegian duo Smerz, out today on Shopping Records. Accompanying the release today is a trailer for ALLINA, which follows the previously released video for “My Producer.”
Allina made her main stage debut at All-In’s SS24 show in Paris last fall. Conceived by All-In founders Benjamin Barron and Bror August Vestbø, the duo called upon their long-time collaborators Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg of Smerz, to construct the musical narrative of their fictitious pop star. All within 15 minutes, Smerz pack in dance music, pop-rock, minimal electronic, world-building interludes, and sexy R&B; exploring the current state of pop music, a genre caught somewhere between vigor and collapse, paparazzi flicker, and 24/7 spotlights.
For this latest project, Smerz shifted their focus to a new main character, whereas their 2021 critically acclaimed debut album Believer depicted a surrealist account of Motzfeldt and Stoltenberg’s life between Oslo and Copenhagen. On ALLINA we see Smerz finding faith and excitement in pop music and its potential to constantly renew itself through fearless plundering of the past and disparate genres.
