Samia shares “To Me It Was (Hovvdy Version)”
Samia shares “To Me It Was (Hovvdy Version)” the third in a series of single releases dubbed “Honey Reimagined” featuring a variety of artists (including Blondshell, Maya Hawke, Ruston Kelly + more TBA) reinterpreting songs from Honey, sophomore album from Samia released earlier this year via Grand Jury. The Austin, TX pop duo puts their stamp on “To Me It Was,” a song that captures the anxiety that comes with youthful abandon, by adding synths and falsetto vocals to their rendition of the more subdued, acoustic-leaning original.
Samia shares: “‘To Me It Was’ is one of a few songs on Honey that existed in a bunch of different iterations before its final form. I wrote it with Christian Lee Hutson a year before we started making the record. We both played separate versions live in our sets a few times. When I first started playing it out it was this big rave up of a rock song. In the studio and in the context of the record the song just made more sense stripped down, with this really warm back porch feeling. Hovvdy turning it into a bedroom pop song feels exactly right – the perfect middle ground.”
Hovvdy shares: “It was an honor to cover and get to know such a well-written and beautiful song.” “To Me It Was (Hovvdy Version)” follows Maya Hawke’s cover of the anthemic title-track “Honey” from July, and Blondshell’s cover of “Charm You” from June.
Samia recently performed at Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco and documented her experience for a Tour Diary with Interview Magazine, and will continue on the road to perform at festivals overseas and stateside including End of the Road (London, UK), Electric Picnic (Stradbally, IE), and All Things Go (Columbia, MD), and will embark on tour dates including a notable appearance supporting Boygenius on September 30th at Philadelphia’s Mann Center, and select shows with Noah Kahan this fall.
Honey was recorded at North Carolina studio Betty’s –- owned and operated by Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sandborn and Amelia Meath, frequent touring partners of Samia’s. It was produced by Caleb Wright, part of the team that helmed The Baby, Samia’s 2020 debut” and a founding member of one of Samia’s favorite bands, The Happy Children. It features some of her nearest and dearest friends: Christian Lee Hutson, Briston Maroney, Jake Luppen, Raffaella.
Samia shares the following about Honey: “This record is about learning to see the love around you. Sometimes the only thing I can be certain of is the way it feels. Even when I zoom all the way out, the little things matter the most. I was trying to imagine looking back at the end of life and what I’d have to say about it right now. This is a little bit of it. Telling stories, making amends, trying to show people I love them. It’s a community record – I made it with Caleb Wright and our friends in the woods in North Carolina.”
