Peeling drop new video for "Wondering Womb"

Peeling released their current EP, 7 Years of Blood, last week on Buzz Records. Today the band has released a video for the EP’s track “Wandering Womb”. The EP is the second release from the band, which is led by singer/guitarist Annabelle Lee and features members of Dilly Dally and TOPS, following on the heels of the band’s 2016 Buzz Records debut EP, Rats In Paradise. The “Wandering Womb” video, was directed by Lee, and shot by Preoccupations’ drummer Mike Wallace in Joshua Tree National Park, sees Lee and guitarist Alana DeVito, clad in menstrual blood smeared bridal gowns, walking together through the desert with rifles in what Noisey describes as “a subversion…as they are aggressively pursuing this barren landscape, away from thoughts derived by men who don’t understand their bodies.”

The premiere is accompanied by an interview with Lee in which she discusses the new EP, the band’s plans for the future, and the inspiration behind “Wandering Womb” and its video.

“‘Wandering Womb’ is a song kind of about ‘difficult women'” says Lee. “This song… the history sort of goes back a little bit. In Liberty Village—kind of right near the VICE office, and really close to my house in Parkdale—there used to be a woman’s reformatory center right where the soccer park is now in the 1800s. It was a reformatory for unruly women. They could get sent there for being unwed mothers or not having the right manners and undergo all of these crazy shock therapies. They tried to reform them into proper Victorian women. I kind of got into a wormhole with that. They gave you this diagnosis called “wandering womb,” which is kind of like hysteria. [That diagnosis] goes back to Ancient Greece. They thought the womb was an animal inside an animal so that a woman’s womb had a mind of its own. If it was off-kilter, then it would make the woman do all of these crazy things. So that’s where the inspiration for where the song came from.”

Building on her work in her previous project, Mexican Slang, Lee began conceptualizing Peeling in the summer of 2015, writing the songs that would make up their first EP before recruiting her bandmates and recording at Union Sound Company (Metz, Fucked Up) in December of that year. 7 Years of Blood, is a sequel of sorts to the first EP, with the songs composed shortly after the tracking of Rats In Paradise, as the band that Lee had essentially formed for the recordings began to take shape, and completed in early 2017 following a series of tour dates in the fall of last year with Preoccupations, Death Valley Girls and Muuy Biien after the band had coalesced into a formidable unit.

“If you add up the average time a woman spends on her period during her life, it’s like 7 straight years,” Lee says of the EP’s title “That’s an annoying thought, but also pretty powerful. Which is what this EP is about, taking control and harnessing your individual power.”
