Laika Songs Drops Sunny Indie-Pop Single “SPF Infinity”
“SPF Infinity,” the latest single from Laika Songs is out today. The track is from the upcoming debut LP from Laika Songs, Slowly Spiraling Towards The Light, mixed by Dave Benton (Trace Mountains, LVL Up), out June 14th on Two Worlds (US) & Galaxy Train (Japan). The single features additional performances by Chanele McGuinness (background vocals), Danny T. Levin (horns), and Ian Romano (drums).
Evan Brock found an abandoned parlor guitar in a distant cousin’s closet. This discovery set him on a path of songwriting that spans nearly three decades, culminating in his debut full-length collection under the moniker Laika Songs. The name itself, a nod to the influential works of Jason Molina’s Songs: Ohia and Will Oldham’s Palace Songs, is a testament to a profound reverence for the art form—an unwavering focus on the songs, their essence, and their ability to transcend the transient nature of the music industry.
Following last year’s EP Infinity is Whatever from Brock’s indie rock band Neil Jung, the eleven songs that comprise Slowly Spiraling Towards the Light represent a philosophical reframing and introspection. The resulting record is the spiritual successor to the demo tapes he made throughout high school on assorted boomboxes and borrowed 4-track recorders. These songs are about searching for meaning and nature in a technically encumbered world, reflecting on both moments of lightness, and on the existential weight of aging and mortality.
