Jessy Lanza Debuts “Lick In Heaven”
Jessy Lanza has released a new song and video, “Lick in Heaven.” The track is now available via Hyperdub. The release comes alongside upcoming European tour dates beginning February 28th, in Oslo, Norway. “Lick in Heaven” was co-written with long-time musical partner Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys). “Once I’m spinning I can’t stop spinning” sings Jessy, “I’m going all the way”; the pop bounce and doorbell-chime melody carefully camouflages the fact that the lyrics are about getting really, really angry, or in her own words “going nuclear.”
In the accompanying video, directed by Winston H Case, she plays the featured guest of the budget fictional cable show Good Morning Ontario, performing in front of an assembled audience of regular folks. Each of them loses themselves to the music in their own special way at the enthusiastic encouragement of the two presenters. It’s funny, sweet, and apocalyptic all at once.
“I started with the 101 bass line in my studio in NYC sent it to Jer (Jeremy of Junior Boys) and he created the catchy refrain of the chorus and the Omnisphere, barbershop-type voice. This song is about being angry with people and not knowing what to do about it. I find that when I’m a certain combo of sad and angry I reach a point of provocation where I can’t stop myself from going nuclear.”
