POWER is the Fourth studio album from the LA-based Indie rock band Illuminati Hotties. The Band hone in on their expansive indie rock songwriting style that their fans know and love. This album perfectly blends poppy and uplifting songs with acoustic and melancholic songs fitting together on this wonderful new album.

The opening of the album starts with the anxty guitar riff in Can’t Be still followed by some of the nicest production and vocal melodies and harmonies on the record, which is a very nice introduction to the album. The following track, I Would Like, Still Love You, has very optimistic and positive energy throughout the track, with an excellent breakdown happening near the end. Throw (Like Raft) Has a similar chipper pop vibe going on to the last song, which I find to be satisfying in the chorus, but I think the verses lack a little bit of character and come off a little safe compared to the rest of the tracklist. The fourth cut-off of the album Rot has some nice chord changes and production elements that add dynamic to the album, but keep the song within the general vibe of the album. Falling In Love With Somebody Better sends us back to the happy sounds of the first couple of tracks off the record. It’s a good song, but it doesn’t stand out to me as one of the strongest songs off the album.

Producer and frontperson Sarah Tudzin Seems to have a powerful vision of the current pop direction and is writing and recording some of their prettiest music yet. One of My favourite tunes off the album is Sleeping In, which sounds like a Race for the Price era flaming lips song mixed with modern indie bands like Boy Genius or Clairo. Plus, I appreciate the Arthur Russell reference in the first verse. The next track, Didnt Featuring British songwriter and producer Cavetown, is another pop banger with some fun synths and distorted guitar chords. You Are Not What You Are Is a melancholy track with some really interesting production and well-performed vocals. The DIssonant and heavy guitar intro of What The Fuzz sees the Band go back to their punk roots and play with some heavier elements rather than sparkly synths and clean guitars they are using heavy tones and squealing guitar leads. The vocal production on YSl adds a more electronic and futuristic element to the album’s end, which is a very cool moment on the record.

The Title track, Power, Defines this record in many ways. It is dynamic in ways you don’t expect, poppy in all the ways you want, and a good time overall. The song to end this album off is the sad and reflective song Everything Changes a quick track that ebbs and flows throughout the song with beautiful strings, acoustic guitars and ambient passages ending this album off with a heartfelt message.
