Haviah Mighty Shares Visualizer For “Occasion”
Haviah Mighty has shared “Occasion,” the track is the second single off her Polaris Prize-winning 2019 release, 13th Floor. ” Says Haviah of the new track, “On this record, I focus on the conquest to continue working towards dominating as a music creator. I’ll continue to create through honest introspection, and a desire to lead rather than follow – even if it makes others uncomfortable. Essentially, this song is about the low expectations that people have of those that don’t follow or fit the status quo, and how I’ll push to overcome those doubts and surpass those expectations. The ‘occasion’ is my downfall, and in this song, I fight its existence…”
To help her build upon the stems bounced to her from producer Sauce Junky, she asked her brother (Mighty Prynce) to lend percussion. Haviah is keenly aware of how to exploit the formulas that make a hard hit, and she tucks that into the foundation of “Occasion” while layering in misty arpeggios and a hook sung as flawlessly as the verses are ruthlessly spun.
Haviah has been telling a very deliberate story since the release of 13th Floor, blending elements of rap/Hip Hop, Caribbean rhythms, frenetic electro, and diverse instrumentation to tackle marginalization and racism head-on. The project won her the honor of being the first Hip Hop artist as well as the first Black woman to win the Polaris Music Prize. Haviah’s work ethic is relentless – watch her major freestyle from February on SWAY in the Morning’s ‘5 Fingers Of Death’ to get a sense – and she’s nowhere near from done. Following last month’s smash single “Atlantic” and today’s release of “Occasion.”
