“H.A.O.U.” By Casper Caan

Casper Caan drops his debut LP Last Chance on July 12th. Ahead of the release, he has shared a video for “H.A.O.U.” The album is a collection of indie pop songs that reflect Caan’s musical worldview — a sound that at times resembles the body-moving pulse of LCD Soundsystem, the brash intimacy of Swedish indie and Britpop. The new single follows previous releases “Keep This to Myself,” and “Great Expectations.”

Today, the multi-artist shares the lead-up single to Last Chance’s release, H.A.O.U.. A total head-whip of a song—just when you think you’ve got it figured out, Caan’s latest concoction shapeshifts ever so slightly in front of you. From the starry-eyed Farfisa organ tones that open the tune, recalling the glittery dreams of the 1980s, the fist-pumping “H.A.O.U.” soon throws in a driving dance beat and the kind of rubbery surf-guitar playing you’d expect on a Pixies record. “Feed the sun/ I never thought I could be the one/ An Obi Wan who could pass the last chance,” he joyfully sings in the motivating tune, which doubles as an ode to the birth of his son. As with everything else from Caan’s upcoming odyssey, “H.A.O.U.” defies immediate categorization—it sounds soft and intimate, yet impossibly huge, the size of several football stadiums maybe—but its slipperiness never slides into obfuscation, instead delivering a proper indie anthem just in time for the summer. The animated video for the song once again features the protagonist who’s appeared in all of Caan’s previous clips.
