Ellis Debuts “What i know now”
Ellis has returned with “what I know now”, accompanied by a video directed by Justin Singer. The track is off the singer/songwriter’s forthcoming album no place that feels like, available April 26th. “what I know now” details Siggelkow’s experience around her debut LP, detailing the way that interactions with her label and the press alienated her from her music.
Ellis on “what I know now”:
“when i showed this song to a close friend before it was finished, she commented on how sad it was and i found that kind of funny because although i understand where she was coming from, this song doesn’t feel sad to me. it was so cathartic to write and the cheekiest i have ever allowed myself to be. ultimately, “what i know now” is a diss track to the music industry, but even though the verses are very specific to my own experience, i think the chorus serves as this very universal refrain – that hindsight can really be such a bitch.”
lyrics
i set out to make something honest
you laughed at me when i said it out loud
and i did my best to keep my promise but my
voice was just a whisper in a crowd
and i guess i felt bad that i wasn’t being grateful
i didn’t think i deserved the chance you took on me
and i didn’t realize that when i signed
that dotted line i was giving away a part of me
that i wanted to keep
and it was too good to be true
and i wish i knew what i know now
i know just what i’d do
if i could redo it all somehow
and i remember the knot in my stomach
and the long and lonely walks with headphones on
crying in the booth, i couldn’t help it
i started to hate all my own songs
and after the fact you called my feelings arbitrary
you said that i was both too specific and too vague
you wrote that there wasn’t anything to latch onto
and i was gasping for air between a couple of cliches
and it was too good to be true
and i wish i knew what i know now
i know just what i’d do
if i could redo it all somehow
and i want to know
what more did you expect from me?
under the control of some old dudes from mississippi
and it was too good to be true
and i wish i knew what i know now
i know just what i’d do
if i could redo
it all somehow
and it was too good to be true
and i wish i knew what i know now
i know just what i’d do
if i could redo it all
