fish narc, is the project of multi-artist Ben Funkhouser, his new album, frog song, will drop on February 14th via K Records (Beat Happening). Today he returns with new single, “boxy volvo.” fish narc has a number of US and UK record release show celebrations lined up for February, including Rough Trade in-store performances in both countries.

Funkhouser discussed the new song saying:

“After five weeks on tour in the Fall 2023, I had built up a lot of ideas that I didn’t really know how to set into motion. Doing music for a living changes your ears, and the streaming format changes the way you categorize and relate to the music you listen to. I wanted to refresh my listening habits and rebuild my library of songs, as well as my guitar and singing chops. I wrote ‘boxy volvo’ that month, while my girlfriend Emma was out of town in New York. I met her in NYC, where she lived at 538 Johnson and drove this old boxy Volvo station wagon with thirty air fresheners on the rearview mirror. I made up the lyrics about the dice, cuz it was too hard to sing ‘thirty air fresheners.'”

Funkhouser arrived on the scene with Thraxxhouse and GothBoiClique collectives, who helped to pioneer the wave of raw underground rap and released numerous solo albums, eventually catching the attention of K founder, Calvin Johnson, who recognized that Funkhouser’s impressive and diverse body of work was operating in the same unconstrained DIY tradition that defined the long-running label. “It was clear from the first encounter that he has a vision and follows through in a trying to achieve it,” Johnson explains. “Plus, his songs are catchy, the dancing in mandatory, the sing-along irresistible.”
