binki releases new EP Antennae
binki has released his new EP Antennae, the album is out today via The Fader Label. Featuring brand new single ‘Freakin’, binki begins a 16-date US headline tour next month. The artist has previously toured with Gus Dapperton, King Princess and Glass Animals in the wake of acclaimed first EP, Motor Function.
Listeners can tune into Antennae with new track ‘Freakin’, a playful funk workout detailing the push and pull of a hookup. It’s the perfect introduction to an EP that explores where vulnerability and bravado meet: on ‘Freakin’, binki oscillates between “feeling like myself again” and “trying to be a man but I’m ill-equipped”, with production from Marvy Ayy ($NOT, KennyHooplah) and mixing from Justin Raisen (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Yves Tumour).
Antennae is a collection of cathartic off-the-cuff anecdotes, with deeper meanings that zero in on where binki stands in the world right now. A first generation American whose family originates from Kenya, Baraka Ongeri (binki) grew up in Pennsylvania before moving to New York in 2018, after getting a degree in acting at UNC Greensboro. Influences range from Siouxsie Sioux and King Krule to Tyler, The Creator. Written between London, Los Angeles and New York, first single ‘Hotel Window’ witnessed binki at his most bitingly self-deprecating; a born-performer’s vent on social anxiety. Recent followup ‘Rocket Shop’ soundtracked overcompensating for a lack of confidence, whilst ‘Doomsday’ is a moment of existential nonchalence, wondering if you’d really want to know the date the world was going to end.
