James Ivy Drops "Under Tongues" Video
James Ivy has shared a new video for "Under Tongues"

James Ivy, aka Jimmy Butler, has returned with a new single and video, “Under Tongues”. It’s his first solo release since “Peace Sounds.” While “Peace Sounds” transformed an ambient piano loop into a room-shaking uptempo chorus, “Under Tongues” reveals yet another facet of Jimmy’s ever-increasing range, with shoegaze-inspired guitar layers anchoring the unexpectedly vulnerable lyrics. The video for “Under Tongues” was shot in Texas, primarily on an iPhone, and self-directed by James Ivy along with Luke Shippey and Leia Jospé.

On “Under Tongues”, Jimmy says:

“”Under Tongues” is made up of bits and pieces of a lot of different music that inspires me: Weird reversed shoegaze guitar leads, trip-hop drums, and electronic elements also laced throughout. It’s exciting for this one to finally come out because I still like listening to it even after hearing it hundreds of times in the year that has passed since I finished it. That doesn’t happen for me often.”

Since releasing his debut EP Good Grief! via FADER Label (Clairo, Binki) in October 2021, which he described as “my best interpretation of pop music”, James Ivy has stayed busy. That dexterous, shapeshifting collection of pop songs arrived amidst a relentless slate of touring with Porter Robinson, which saw Jimmy playing to packed rooms across the US and EU.

2022 saw Jimmy cap off touring with his debut headline full-band show, selling out Baby’s All Right in his home base of NYC. Flexing his production and songwriting talents, Jimmy worked with LA-based artist THE BLSSM on “I Hate Sunday”, “Dizzy”, and “Evil Twin” from their April 2022 EP, PURE ENERGY; he also collaborated with Wavedash, lending his vocals to the trio’s single “Chicago Loop”.
