OMBIIGIZI, is the project of of Zoon (Daniel Monkman) and Status/Non-Status (Adam Sturgeon) return with the first new music since their JUNO Award nominated and Polaris Music Prize shortlisted album, Sewn Back Together. “Back At Me” is a collaborative single between OMBIIGIZI and Peter Dreimanis (July Talk). The Anishinaabe duo were approached by Dreimanis with the spark of the song, a ragged and irrepressibly melodic post-punk rocker dedicated to the spirit of friendship. “I love it when friendship is palpable in a recording, when a piece of music laughs with you in a fast-food burger booth and takes you out to catch up on a walk by the river,” says Dreimanis.

The duo describe “Back At Me” as “a song that is a lot of fun to play, and we wanted that feeling to be represented in the recording – everyone keeping it simple, singing and jamming out on a whim.” Dreimanis explains that the song “began to appear last summer, as a tune I would hum to myself with an absent mind… When I started to play with it more, I immediately thought of Daniel and Adam. OMBIIGIZI strikes me as a testament to that kind of friendship, and I’m in awe of the sound they make together. We had a blast making this song, and I’m glad it can go out and meet some new friends in the world now.”

The family on Sewn Back Together includes the production duo of Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene and Nyles Spencer of The Bathouse Studio. Recorded there in fast and intentional sessions during the summer of 2021, Drew and Spencer – along with musicians Eric Lourenço and Drew McLeod from Status/Non-Status and Zoon, respectively – helped steer this collision of divergent artists into some glorious sonic territory steeped in shoegaze, dream pop, anthemic rock, Chicago post-rock, and 2nd wave emo. While not always getting to play and perform alongside other members of their community, OMBIIGIZI is a coming together – with Sewn Back Together, a resounding statement shaped by healing and the guidance of culture.
