Aphex Twin New Immersive AR Experience for “Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760”
Aphex Twin has released a free augmented reality (AR) app ‘YXBoZXh0d2lu’, with immersive experiences to accompany his new EP ‘Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760’ released on July 28th via Warp Records. Created by Tokyo-based spatial internet studio KALKUL, visual artist Weirdcore with Warp and Aphex Twin, the app offers an alternate world of interactive AR bringing the artwork, music and video to life in 3D.
The app ‘YXBoZXh0d2lu’, which translates to ‘aphextwin’ when decrypted using Base64 binary-to-text encoding, is a collection of AR landscapes soundtracked by Aphex Twin music from the new release. The augmented reality experiences are triggered by pointing your camera at the packaging for the release. The front cover, CD or Vinyl front, back and inner sleeves unlock 3D visuals for Blackbox Life Recorder 21f, while a special trifold “anamorphic diorama” included in the vinyl packaging reveals four full track-by-track immersive experiences using Weirdcore’s visuals
Aphex Twin has headlined nine festivals around Europe over the summer, with Weirdcore providing visuals at each show. The YXBoZXh0d2lu app trail started alongside these shows in early June where festival-goers could enter 3-meter cube sculptures to find details of the record, whilst immersed in an AR world – accompanied by new music and hidden giveaways. An unreleased ambient version of the EPs lead track (‘Blackbox Life Recorder 20 Ambient 760’) was made available via a Google Drive folder that was written in base64 code hidden in the wall of the AR cube at Sonar Festival.
