“WWIII” by Jimmy Whispers
A new one-off single from Jimmy Whispers is out now, titled “WWIII.” Following the release of his album The Search For God earlier this year, the track sees Jimmy go in a new sonic direction, veering away from his usual electronic style. While the album was created mostly with two vintage synths, a drum machine, and a busted karaoke machine, “WWIII” was recorded in a studio with Jimmy as a guitar-playing singer-songwriter alongside an all-star cast. The nostalgic, breezy vibe of the instrumental belies the song’s true meaning, as Jimmy’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics about memes and television spell out a bleak modern existence. Jonathan Rado (Weyes Blood, Father John Misty, Whitney), produced the track and also played drums and piano, Macie Stewart (Finom, FKA Ohmme) added strings, John Anderson (Girls) played guitar, and it was mixed by Jarvis Taveniere (Woods, Purple Mountains, Waxahatchee).
The release comes alongside an official lyric video that uses classic memes to display the lyrics, and footage of Jimmy with his guitar in the mountains.
Speaking about the track he says: “I first wrote “WWIII” back in 2016, but it now seems to mirror our present day existence in 2023. A world war already in progress under our noses. We sit docile in our homes glued to our screens, distracted from climate change, violence, and a fast-approaching technological singularity: Memes are “just words on top of pictures” / TV is “just one big long commercial” / Young couples question “How can we raise a child just to watch them die in this world?” This song feels more relevant now than ever.”
