IDLES Remix Whispering Sons' Single "Heat"

Whispering Sons, have shared a brand-new remix of their single “Heat” by IDLES. Stripping the song to its bare bones, “Heat” gets turned upside down in a hypnotizing industrial disco noise fest.

“I fell in love with this band within 30 seconds of listening”, Mark Bowen of IDLES explains, “It’s an approach to Gothy-new-wavey-post-punk that you can only seem to get from bands from mainland Europe, then and now. There’s a realness to it, it lacks the contrivance of its UK version, it’s familiar without being nostalgic, raw and polished at the same time. Both thought out and feeling. With the remix, I wanted to exaggerate all the gothic elements and take them to extremes of existential dread and doom to shaking all that out on the goth disco dance floor.”

“We’ve been long time IDLES fans!” singer Fenne Kuppens exclaims. “Whether we were blasting ‘Mother’ through the backstage to get us warmed up pre-show, or chanting “concrete to leather” when the adrenaline was still pouring as we were driving back to the hotel, their music always put us in the right mindset. Getting one of our tracks remixed by them is pretty unbelievable.”

Not only did IDLES put their gnashing teeth in one of Whispering Son’s songs, they also invited the band as a special guest on their German dates in support of their new album Crawler. The original version of “Heat” appears on Whispering Sons’ latest album Several Others, out now on [PIAS] Recordings.

Fast-paced and ferocious, lead singer Fenne Kuppens delivers her signature low register vocals (inspired by artists such as Xiu Xiu and Chinawoman) over angular guitars and bullish drums, hatching an explosive energy that sees the band release their most hook-laden song to date.

The track was inspired by film noir classic ‘Night and the City’, guitarist Kobe Lijnen was captivated by the imagery of fast movement contrasting with confrontation. This is reflected by the very direct verses opposed to the grander and wider sounding choruses. “Heat” was one of the first songs to be written for the album, but one of the last to be finished. The theme of confrontation became central to the lyrics, resulting in a candid and straightforward song.

Several Others marked Whispering Sons first full-length release since their 2018 debut Image, which saw them garner early support at press and radio as well as tallying up millions of streams for their dark and unique blend of experimental and frenetic post-punk. Similarly, prior to lockdown, their infamously ferocious live shows had also seen them begin to firmly cement themselves as a must-see live band playing alongside the likes of The Murder Capital, Patti Smith, The Soft Moon and Croatian Amor.
