“The Future’s A Riot” by Alex Orange Juice

Alex Orange Drink has released “The Future’s A Riot,” his first release on Conor Oberst’s new record label Million Stars that was launched earlier this year. The official video for the song features footage chronicling his 2023 diagnosis of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma and writing and recording the during his first week of treatment. “The Future’s A Riot,” follows the artist’s 2021 album Everything Is Broken Maybe That’s OK. He was also featured as a guest vocalist on Bright Eyes’ song “Rainbow Overpass” and co-writer of 7 songs on their new album Five Dice, All Threes.

About the song, Alex Orange Drink explains: “This song was written and recorded exactly one year ago during my first week of treatment. It’s a celebration & appreciation of life conceived in the darkest moment. At a time where my own personal future was extremely uncertain, this song imagines our collective future with optimism, unity and a defiance for the terrifying status quo. This is the first release from the 50+ songs (5 albums) that were recorded through 35 days of radiation & chemotherapy. Thanks to the generosity and kindness of so many, I was able to live in the studio every day of treatment & tell my story through music. I’m excited to share the series of albums, which defy genre, space & time, and stand as a document – an exorcism of creation in survival mode.”

Alex Orange Drink is the solo project of Alex Zarou Levine, best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Brooklyn punk band, The So So Glos. As co-founder of venues Market Hotel and Shea Stadium, Levine has been a key figure in New York City’s D.I.Y. scene for nearly two decades.
