“Signal” By Scout Gillett

Scout Gillett recently released her debut album no roof no floor via Captured Tracks. This past week, the Brooklyn based artist played a a sold out hometown show at Union Pool, featuring opening sets from her brother Magic Marty (a professional magician) and Ryley Walker. She’ll also kick off a tour supporting Sarah Shook & the Disarmers early next month, leading into headlining dates that include Chicago’s Color Club (11/19) and LA’s Zebulon (12/11). While “home” can be a tough thing for Gillett to pinpoint, she found her place in Brooklyn’s DIY scene, playing in multiple live bands and even starting her own booking company to organize shows for other independent artists. Her intrepid nature results from a childhood spent running barefoot through rural Missouri and coming of age in Kansas City’s punk scene, and her debut solo album features shades of all these past and present lives. Recorded in a big wooden barn called The Chicken Shack (producer Nick Kinsey’s recording studio in Stanfordville, New York) with the doors wide open, there’s a sense of spaciousness on no roof no floor befitting its title. The arrangements, too—which feature contributions from Palehound’s Ellie Kempner and MS MR’s David Lizmi—reflect Scout’s rural roots and her indie spirit: a fusion of upbeat, guitar-driven melodies and folk/country instrumentation like pedal steel, harmonica, and tenor banjo.
