“Saltlick” by Grumpy

Grumpy is fronted Heaven Schmitt, the artist keeps their friends close and their exes closer. The keyboardist and bassist are Heaven’s ex girlfriends, the drummer is their ex-husband (the guitar player and Heaven never dated but when they first moved to New York Heaven had a crush on Diego and there was one night when they thought they might kiss but they didn’t).

The deep intimacy shared between the band’s members might explain the tantalizing sense of desire that echoes from song to song in Grumpy’s growing catalog, and Heaven’s live band of exes also speaks to the way the Grumpy project is built on balancing beauty and ugliness, pleasure and pain, and recognizing that you can find truth and healing even in life’s most brutal moments. Their willingness to share the stage with people they have loved is coupled with a willingness to share moments that others might try to hide, and their sense of ease and humor provides the reassurance that you can find joy and inspiration in the painful side of love.

After playing high profile shows in NYC with Katy Kirby, This Is Lorelei, Sinai Vessel and Al Menne, Grumpy is announcing their signing to Bayonet Records to release their new EP entitled Wolfed out October 25th. To celebrate the news, they are sharing a new single called “Saltlick,” accompanied by a video Heaven made with Neil Shukla.

“In making the first Grumpy LP, Loser (2020), I passed off too many decisions, telling myself that I didn’t know how to do this. I resolved to, from then on, only release music that truly sounded like me. It took me a few years but in that time I learned how to speak up, produce and trust myself. Now, everything I make feels so much more like a reflection of who I am. Not only am I having so much more fun with this EP, but in taking the reins on the production I’ve emerged with a much greater confidence in myself as an artist.”

Speaking to the mood they intended to cultivate with the song, Heaven says:

“Peanuts roll around around the bottom of my tote bag slowly creating a mess that is insignificant and mood destroying. I plot out an outfit that my ex husband would hate; diabolical and flamboyant. I’m loose and uncontained, I’m slowly breaking into smaller peanut pieces, I’m salty and my phone is about to die.”
