Ray Bull debuts new single “Marry A Skater”

Ray Bull has released “Marry A Skater,” the single/video is off their forthcoming album Please Stop Laughing, available May 8th via AWAL. Following lead single, “All That You Are,” “Marry A Skater” carries an irony and humor that feels lifted directly from Ray Bull’s private banter: “I got a friend / He spent a year in the Bahamas / working on his manners.”
The NYC duo, including Aaron Graham and Tucker Elkins recently appeared on Subway Takes to express the opinion that “concerts are just a little too loud.” Starting in May, they’ll test this theory across the U.S. with recently announced tour dates in support of Please Stop Laughing.
Reflecting on “Marry A Skater,” which is inspired by The Flaming Lips, Wilco, Neil Young and Karen Dalton, Ray Bull says: “We mostly write our songs together at the computer in Logic or we write them separately and bring them to one another. “Marry A Skater” is one of the rare tracks that was written in the old school manner, pen to paper, sitting at our out of tune piano in our living room. It is about being there for someone, it is about how the best way you can support someone you love is to give them enough space to fall. It’s about failure and absurdity adding to the grace and beauty of someone’s presence. It feels like it fits into the larger album in the ways that it has pockets of different worlds and on and off sentiments. The outro was lifted entirely from another song. The original song turns off while a new one turns on.
Ray Bull was never going to be a band in the traditional sense because neither Elkins nor Graham set out to be musicians. They set out to be artists, and music just happened to be the most effective canvas. “We can be chameleons,” says Elkins. “We like working with variation.” Please Stop Laughing is the result of five years living and creating on top of each other.
