Prefuse 73, the project of Guillermo Scott Herren — releases his new album, New Strategies for Modern Crime Vol. 2, today on Lex Records (Eyedress).The album is accompanied by a new single/video, “Complete Rejection.” The track Follows singles “Lion Chorus” and “Vast Wildlife Poison” and “Complete Rejection.”

The video, directed by Maxim Kelly, “came from a write-up I received from the artist about how the media makes us live in fear and the inspiration for the record. I loved the cinematic soundtrack, which got me thinking about updating old social guidance films on crime for a modern audience. I noticed many AI videos looked the same and already felt dated, but I saw an opportunity to use AI differently. By incorporating AI in the backgrounds or small parts of the image, we created something both modern and timeless.”

The companion album to New Strategies for Modern Crime Vol. 1, released this past March, New Strategies for Modern Crime Vol. 2 sees Herren continue evolving his groundbreaking take on experimental composition through the lens of the media’s sensationalism of crime. One of the darkest yet cohesive releases of his career, the two companion albums were inspired by Herren’s experiences of living in New York. He reflects: “I’ve lived in NYC since the 90s but I think during the post-COVID era, most ‘media’ has become obsessed with crime statistics and inflated ‘fear’ over basic human needs. I wanted to channel this surreal landscape – where crime has become a strange form of entertainment and journalistic distraction into sound.”

Talking with the excitement of someone working on their first ever album, the re-energized virtuoso adds: “It means that when you do finally hear my music, it’s hopefully created in a way that prompts you to see a whole scene play out in your head.” Whether the album paints a vivid, Philip K. Dick-esque movie in your mind or not, it’s clear the artist known as Prefuse 73 is continuing to push forward artistically.
