Get Up
NewJeans
Since their debut last year, newly formed K-Pop group NewJeans’ ascent and eventual domination has been swift and deserved. From their excellent debut EP New Jeans and follow-up singles “Ditto” and “OMG” — the former being one of the best K-Pop songs of all time — their curiously soft exploration of contemporary R&B and drum and bass has made each project highly anticipated.
Get Up, their second EP, is a silky-smooth follow-up that expands on their previous styles and sounds while still incorporating their dynamic inventiveness. The average age of the group’s members is just 17, but from the assured vocals of “Super Shy,” hazy hypnotism of “Cool With You” or explosive “ETA”, it feels like the girls have been studying the modern pop landscape for years.
Dutch R&B singer Erika de Casier is behind most of the composition of Get Up, evident on the UK garage lead single “Super Shy,” a song that’s tame at first, but grows over time. Addressing a crush they’re too afraid to talk to, the girls muse, “You don’t even know my name, do you?” Later, though, they assure, “Wait a minute while I make you mine.” It’s one of their best songs yet, and, deservedly, is starting to make its impact on the US charts.
Upon first listen, the brash horns of “ETA” stand out as one of NewJeans’ least subtle musical choices, but it ends up blending into the explosive chorus as they sing about a boy’s whereabouts before he comes over, a delightfully high-school problem to have. On the understated “Cool With You,” they sing about the ease with which they can just be with a partner, and “ASAP” is a spacey, late-night request to chat that ends the EP on a soft and subdued note.
NewJeans continue the promise they showed within the very first minutes of their career. Get Up is effortlessly produced, with every beat falling into place as if it were meant to be there. Get with it or get behind: NewJeans is the future.
