Today, Matt Pond PA has shared new single and video “Risky Business.” The track is off his forthcoming album The Ballad of the Natural Lines Out, available February 7th vid streaming services. Says Matt Pond: “There have been so many late nights driving on tour, everyone else asleep, where it felt like I was adrift in the middle of the ocean. No houses, no lights—just the yellow lines stretching over blue-black asphalt, pulling me along. Sometimes, far off, a radio tower would blink red from a mountain ridge. A small, distant sign of life—just enough to keep hope flickering and the wheels moving forward.”

Matt Pond’s music has been described as a supper club crooner inspired by equal parts Ink Spots, and, in a recitation, singer-songwriter Faye Webster. While the song evokes warm, domestic bliss between Pond and his harmonizing partner, he asserts: “We’re still wild animals playing with fire in the kitchen. We’re both gentle tyrants.”

Matt Pond on the video for “Risky Business:”

“When I was nineteen, I used to hitchhike between Burlington, VT and Hanover, NH. I had cut the tendons in my right hand by accident—couldn’t drive, couldn’t work—so every week that winter, I made the strange pilgrimage back and forth. Traveling salesmen, exiled preachers, wayward husbands—these drifters always had a story to tell and a gospel to preach on the road.

Last week, we unknowingly reenacted that ritual at Cooper Lake in Woodstock, NY. Twenty degrees in the bed of a pickup truck, I felt the old wildness creep back—the thrill of riding with a stranger. What would it smell like? What would I say? Would I live? I’ve come to believe that even the most upright citizens need a little risky business. A little danger, a little abandon to shake things loose.

This broadened landscape, where Pond gets closer to the bone than ever, is one of many compelling aspects of the first Matt Pond PA album of all-new material since 2020’s A Collection of Bees, Pt. 1. After thirteen acclaimed albums, numerous singles and EPs, songs in film and television, and multiple tours to a devoted fanbase, Pond has made some significant life changes.”
