Lightning Dust, the duo of Amber Webber and Joshua Wells, have shared their new single/lyric video “Different War,” the second from their forthcoming new album, Nostalgia Killer. The album is out on June 9th via Western Vinyl. To mark the album’s release, Lightning Dust will head out on a tour of British Columbia in late June.

The track was written following the pair’s romantic split. Webber says, “I wrote this song knowing love had died despite our best efforts to revive it. It’s a song about defeat, surrender and acceptance, comparing love to war. Josh ran with this feeling and created an atmosphere of plodding tension, slowly building to an epic orchestral crescendo, then giving way to a lonely spaciousness.”

Lightning Dust began as a Black Mountain side project in 2007. In the wake of their 2019 split, Webber and Wells decided to stay together as their artistic partnership in Lightning Dust. The experience made them think about nostalgia as a concept and how this sort of longing for the past can be destructive, cancerous, useless. They reconvened virtually in mid-2020 to work together again as creative comrades, sharing some new ideas by correspondence, stitching together their song fragments into the dramatic arrangements now heard across Nostalgia Killer. They both additionally play almost everything on the album, save for a few guitar parts performed by touring band member Rob Butterfield, backing vocals by Himalayan Bear’s Ryan Beattie, and string arrangements performed by viola/violinist Meredith Bates.
