“Hollywood Dreams” By Mild Orange
Ahead of their 2022 winter North American tour, New Zealand band Mild Orange, have shared their latest single “Hollywood Dreams.” The band play their first show on February 16, 2022 in Brooklyn, NY. After the North American dates, the band heads of to Europe and the UK for a run of shows, including stops in London, Barcelona, Berlin, and more.
Formed in 2018, Mild Orange are made up of childhood mates, frontman Josh Mehrtens and lead guitarist Josh Reid, with bassist Tom Kelk and drummer Jack Ferguson. Mild Orange describe their music as summer-bummer psychedelic rock complete with compelling lyrics and are known for their relaxed and buoyant sound, combined with a love of Alex G and Drugdealer.
“We recognise that everybody’s ‘fire’ is going to be different, so we would like to leave this song up to personal interpretation, whether that ‘fire’ be political, societal or one’s personal motivations. For me, ‘What’s Your Fire?’ came from a time in my life where I was trying to figure out who I am, or who the person I want to be is. It asks oneself some intense questions, though hopefully helps oneself find light in the idea that there is always something that you can do to improve yourself or the world around you – no matter how big or small. It’s when we ask ourselves these questions that we consider a potential answer. We have been playing it as an encore at our concerts and festivals in NZ for over a year now, and since then, it has been a highlight of our live sets with it always being the main takeaway from the set when we talk to fans after the show.
This was the first song that we recorded on “Looking For Space”. Despite sounding like a stadium rock song, it was mostly recorded in Barry’s family home lounge in Bannockburn (the most inland town in New Zealand) and also at my family home studio in Arrowtown. But it was too big of a sounding song for me to manage on my laptop/bedroom mixing set up, so to get it to sound bigger than a small room, we took it to Roundhead Studios to engineer and boost the huge sound.
“Hollywood Dreams” was written while feeling crushed by the disappointment of not being able to play music and tour internationally during mid-2020, with no end in sight as to when we could resume chasing our dream to play music around the world and embark on adventures. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel though and things don’t have to happen instantly. It actually ended up being a really productive period for the band, since it forced us to cancel tour plans, and to instead hunker down and record a third album. It’s made us more ready than ever to head out to the world again from New Zealand to play music for the lovely humans out there that wanna boogie with M.O.”
