Fievel Is Glauque

Rong Weicknes by Fievel Is Glauque is the New York City duo’s debut album for Fat Possum records (Youth Lagoon, Spiritualized).  The LP is a wonderfully orchestrated and arranged progressive jazz pop album led by singer Ma Clément and multi instrumentalist and co-producer Zack Phillips.

With time signatures and chord progressions reminiscent to the stylings of Burt Bacharach and Lalo Schifrin, but with the wild avant-garde mood swings of Captain Beefheart, it’s a sound appropriate for a setting of sunken living rooms of 60’s mid-century modern homes surrounded by teak and geometric shaped furniture, shag carpet, and party favours.

Clément’s vocals are lovely, and ethereal at times, creating an easy listening, lounge pop flavour to Phillips’ impressively textured and technical compositions accompanied by musicians that deserve incredibly high praise for their performance.

Hover, the album’s opener, and Kayfabe, are psychedelic jazz free for alls. As Above So Below, the following track, truly captures the warmth and essence
of an early 60’s orchestral pop song. There are hints of new wave in Love Weapon, with truly shining vocals and a sax solo worth dimming the lights for.

Overall, this is a fantastic album. Every style they approach is so perfectly executed, and after a few listens I’m still surprised with something I hadn’t heard previously. And hey, if you don’t have a conversation pit in your living room, Rong Weicknes will certainly transport you to one.
