“Clockwork” by The Bird Calls
The Bird Calls, the project Sam Sodomsky, has dropped new single “Clockwork,” the track is off the multi-artist’s forthcoming album Take Leave, available August 28th via Ruination Record Co. (Hannah Fraces). The Bird Calls play their next show on August 27 in Beckett, MA.
Reflecting on “Clockwork,” the New York-based musician, writer and editor says, “I was in a bad mood and took a walk without my phone to a bookstore in my neighborhood called Troubled Sleep. I think the first thing that came to mind was the rhythm of the lyrics in the verses, which is kinda the pace I walk at when I’m in a bad mood. ‘I guess that’s why they call it clockwork’ was a stray sentence I had in my Notes app for a while. Everything came together really fast when I got back home, and it was immediately one of my favorites I’ve written.”
Sodomsky describes the songs on Take Leave as being, “in part, songs of exile. They are also songs about starting over, about dragging your ass to the next station with all your baggage dragging behind you. In the future there really will be two kinds of listeners: Those who parse their lyrics for signs of life like archaeologists in the ruins of the temple and those who have quit words entirely. Take Leave: Put a comma between them and watch that familiar cycle emerge”.
Sodomsky has been home-recording and self-releasing dozens of albums since 2006, with his first studio album being released via Ruination in 2022. For Take Leave, Sodomsky worked once again with producer Ryan Weiner, this time opting for a more live approach. The duo played all the instruments themselves and built songs around live-in-the-studio performances on guitar and vocals (Sodomsky) and drums (Weiner). Influenced by Bruce Springsteen’s process for making 1984’s Born In The U.S.A., Sodomsky wrote several albums’ worth of songs for the record, shifting between genres and moods, looking to craft the most cohesive, comprehensive statement. Throughout, Sodomsky navigates death, love and aging, meditation, and the music industry.
