Forever Means

Angel Olsen

We are revisiting some of our favourite albums of 2023

Last year Angel Olsen, on her sixth album ‘Big Time’, fully embraced her country and Americana influences, on a record that wore its vulnerability on its sleeve. Her latest EP ‘Forever Means’ serves as another vulnerable expansion to the album, with all four songs connecting through a common theme – self-discovery.

In just 15 minutes, Olsen is able to break out of the chains of the past, and look to survive the future roads traveled. The gentle, largely minimal instrumentals are the perfect soundtrack to the journey of expansive introspection across the EP. Opening track “Nothing’s Free,” is a
drawn-out slow dance number with a piano, organ, saxophone and a sparse drum beat coming together to guide a broken Olsen from the past.

“Forever Means” showcases the true power and emotional intensity of Olsen’s vocal delivery, while “Time Bandits” broadens the term love song to reflect on the balance between the desire for love and the need to survive in this world.

The EP comes to a close with the poignant but rock-orientated “Holding On,” that exposes the vulnerability of opening ourselves up to others, with Olsen asking “How long have you been standing there?/Tell me, how much did you see?” And, just like that it’s over. “Now it’s over,”
Olsen sings on the closing track, and that is the only flaw to this stunning four track EP – that it leaves you wanting more.
