Le Ren has released new single, “Gold in California”, the track is off their forthcoming album, Don’t Be Funny Without Me, available August 28 via Royal Mountain Records. The new single follows “Free Wheeling.” Le Ren has also announced dates in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal in the Fall, as well as a headline show at London’s St Pancras Church on September 11.

Speaking about the new single, Le Ren says: ““Gold in California” was born out of a haunted place. At the time it was written, I was living alone in a bed bug sublet, heartbroken, and recovering from round three of COVID. Spirits were low! My saving grace was a writing session I had set up with Olivia Kaplan, an old friend and one of my favourite songwriters.

We were throwing ideas around when she sang me this line: “feet up on the leather dash, you don’t even have to ask / we can just be quiet, at least for the next few miles.” Though it was my first time hearing it, it felt like one of those songs you’ve always known.

The whole writing process felt like falling in love. I became completely consumed with figuring out the rest of the story and it became all I could think about. We finished writing it in two days and I remember biking around listening to the demo and feeling the serotonin slowly re-enter my body.”

After touring extensively opening for acts like Jeff Tweedy, Devendra Banhart, and Men I Trust, Le Ren returned home to Canada to record the album in Mountain Grove, Ontario. On the LP, Le Ren reflects on emotional entanglements from her twenties and the lingering push-and-pull between attachment, envy, and self-awareness. The result is a record that is both tender and sharply observant, balancing sincerity with a quiet, self-protective humour.
