Day Joy, has released new single, “JFC.” The song is off their forthcoming album, available fall 2025. “JFC” introduces the record’s central theme of “everyday horrors.” The song explores the emotional violence of real-life loss through vivid imagery, setting the tone for an album that draws heavily from the hyperbolic violence found in camp-horror films. Frontman Michael Serrin’s use of these references demonstrates the contrast between the exaggerated violence in fiction and the quieter, more personal violence of life’s deepest struggles.

“JFC” opens with the words “Jesus F*cking Christ!” as an unknown narrator slips and “eats the ice” — an image that suggests a fall, both literal and metaphorical. The question of whether the narrator is running away from or toward something is left unanswered, adding to the track’s unsettling mystery. This sense of uncertainty continues throughout the song, which explores the dichotomies between life and death, urgency and stillness, pain and acceptance.

The song’s lyrical themes are deeply tied to the album’s larger exploration of life’s darker elements, specifically how emotional turmoil can mirror the exaggerated violence of a horror film. Lyrics like “waiting to write another horror film” serve as a reminder of how we often live our lives caught between these extremes, finding meaning in our own personal chaos.

DAY JOY began as a bedroom project, crafting melancholic ballads with lo-fi recordings that blended ethereal ambience with bursts of distortion and raw emotion. These early tracks, recorded on laptops and iPhones, captured the feeling of a beautiful dream slipping into a subtle nightmare. The critical acclaim garnered from these initial recordings led to a signing with Small Plates Records and the release of their debut LP, Go to Sleep, Mess. Sadly, the band’s upward momentum was tragically interrupted by the sudden death of frontman Michael Serrin’s younger brother.

Following a five-year hiatus, Day Joy returned in 2020 with Great Satan, Mass Appeal, a haunting LP that fused antique piano recordings, lo-fi ballads, and confessional folk songs. The album earned the band a broader audience despite the challenges of releasing it during the pandemic, which prevented touring. During this time, they began collaborating with Austin Barker, Dave Hanson, and Andy LeMaster on new music.
