Young Rival Reveal First Autostereogram Video

Young Rival release the first autostereogram ("Magic Eye") music video. Young Rival will be releasing new music and more spectacular videos in 2014.

Young Rival have a knack for releasing unique and captivating music videos and this new clip for Stay Young’s “Black Is Good” is no exception.  The band have teamed up with Jared Raab and Tomasz Dysinski to bring you the first autostereogram (“Magic Eye”) music video.

A stereogram is an image which, when viewed with two eyes, using one of several different techniques, produces the illusion of depth perception.  Autostereogram were popularized by the Magic Eye book series in the 1990s. These are made on computers, and use subtle changes in a repeating pattern to combine depth information for both eyes into one single image. By tricking your eyes into viewing these images a certain way one can see a three dimensional scene. This video is made up of a sequence of something called a “random dot autostereograms”. These are also made on computers, but use subtle differences in a randomly generated field of noise to create the illusion.

“The idea of going through the trouble of creating an entirely 3D video, which could only be viewed this way was too ridiculous to pass up,” says Tomasz Dysinski.  “Until recently there was no easy way to collect 3D data, but the Kinect and a piece of software called RGBD toolkit made it possible. I used to make these things all the time with my brother, when I was a kid so I guess this is just an extension of that.”

Young Rival will be releasing new music and more spectacular videos in 2014.   The band will release one single and video per month in February, March, and April.  2012’s Stay Young was recorded in Toronto with the help of producer Jon Drew (Fucked Up, Tokyo Police Club).

Young Rival tour dates:
