Tim Heidecker, has shared new single, “Like I Do,” the track is off his forthcoming album Slipping Away, out October 18th via Bloodshot Records. The album Follows his 2020 album Fear of Death and 2022’s High School. Slipping Away is described as an album “meant to encourage person-to-person connections.” This August and September, Tim Heidecker & The Very Good Band, alongside Snail Mail, will support Waxahatchee on a run of east coast dates. Additionally, Heidecker and Snail Mail will co-headline a show at Central Park SummerStage in New York.

On his work, the comedian and songwriter notes: “I guess you could say all my records are concept albums to some degree.” Slipping Away, however, tells a story on a larger scale, offering an imagistic framework that allows for some of his brightest melodies, heaviest themes, and most direct and vulnerable lyrics. “There’s a feeling of before the fall and after,” he explains of the album’s two-part arc. “Things are going well… until they’re not. I wanted to write some stories about that experience.” The rollicking, Stones-y story-song “Like I Do” captures this feeling at the heart of the record, with Heidecker narrating the build-ups and let-downs characteristic of romantic relationships.

While the songs on Slipping Away consistently deal with crises of confidence and community, Heidecker refers to the album as a true group project, working with The Very Good Band — Eliana Athayde on bass, vocals and additional production; Josh Adams on drums; Vic Berger on keys; and Connor “Catfish” Gallaher on guitar and pedal steel; alongside a contribution from Tim’s daughter Amelia. “My favorite records are the ones that were just recorded in a room with a band playing,” he says. “And that’s what we did.” If he were to perform them solo acoustic, they might sound like folk songs, with their instantly hummable melodies, singalong choruses, and unexpected ability to zoom out far beyond their initial premises.
