The first half of 2024 has been a remarkable period for the world of music. We have witnessed revitalization across various genres, surprise releases from artists who had been silent for a decade or more, artists capturing genres overnight, and even a resurgence of historical rap battles. With the year only halfway through, it is challenging to predict the industry’s trajectory over the next six months. Nonetheless, we eagerly anticipate new music from a selection of outstanding artists.

One such artist is Childish Gambino, who created a stir in May by removing his “3.15.20” album from streaming services, only to re-release the completed version days later. As an avid listener, I was thrilled to experience the finished project and assumed it would be some time before we heard from him again. However, he has announced a new project, “Bando Stone & the New World,” set to release on July 19th. This album promises to be a significant release as we decipher the message he intends to convey during these tumultuous times.

Bright Eyes, who have not released new material in nearly four years, have also announced their forthcoming album, “Five Dice, All Threes,” slated for September. Similarly, Fontaines D.C. will unveil “ROMANCE” in August, which will undoubtedly be highly anticipated, following the success of their critically acclaimed “Skinty Fia.” Will they push the boundaries with experimental sounds, or will they continue their evolution away from the post-punk revival, embracing the mature, poetic, and abstract style of their previous release? We await their new direction with great interest.

MJ Lenderman, known for his collaborations with prominent indie artists, is set to release his fourth solo guitar album, “Manning Fireworks,” in September. This promises to be another compelling release from an artist with a bright future. In contrast, Bill Callahan, a veteran artist, will release a live album, “Resuscitate!,” recorded during his tour supporting “YTILAER.”

The music scene in 2024 is vibrant, with a plethora of tours and new albums from artists who have not released in decades, as well as emerging talents making a swift impact in their genres. There is truly something for everyone. While we are particularly excited about these announced releases, it is clear that 2024 holds many more surprises in store.
