The Painters Announce LP and Share “Broken Mirror”
Montreal band The Painters have shared “Broken Mirror,” the first single from their debut LP arriving October 20th on EEL Records. Along with the new record, The Painters will unveil an ambitious self-produced visual album featuring contributions from 10 different artists and animators.
“Broken Mirror” is a hallucinogenic jangle anthem that unfolds in three movements, gaining energy as it blasts through space before melting into the sun. The signature introspective lyrics and approachable songwriting by Alex Bourque are contrasted by the enigmatic instrumentation and production stylings of bandmates Michael Halls and Josh Boguski. Together they present a refreshing headphone-friendly addition to the indie cannon.
Lyrically the song offers an earnest reflection on the fragility of friendship and the importance of communication and vulnerability. “Broken Mirror” is carried by morphing violins recorded through a vintage amp with cranked tremolo, creating an atmosphere that marries the soft edge of Yo La Tengo with a dissonance worthy of John Cale.
