August 5th marks the 10th anniversary of Spoon’s album, They Want My Soul, to celebrate, the Austin band is releasing the album on all digital platforms, with a 2xLP gatefold vinyl / 2xCD release to follow on November 8th via Matador Records. Along with the record’s original 10 tracks – including the “Inside Out,” “Do You,” and “Rent I Pay” – ‘They Want My Soul: Deluxe More Soul Edition’ features 11 demos and alternate versions, almost all of them previously unreleased. Ahead of the album’s arrival, the band have shared a live performance of “That’s The Rent I Pay,” fromtheir May 20, 2025 show in Fargo, North Dakota.

Alex Fischel writes:

sometimes places just have the vibe. on may 19 2015, we rolled into the fargo theater after a show in missouri. when we got there our hosts gave us what would normally be a tour of the place — the what’s what’s and where’s where’s; however this time things went a little different. if you crawled – literally crawled – under bowels of the stage, you were greeted by a beautiful old organ that the theatre had used since it opened in the 20’s to accompany film. usually, something like that would only be a souvenir or relic of days gone by, but that was not the case here. not only did the organ work, it also had a hydraulic system which slowly raised it up out of the pit. we immediately decided that this is how we’d start our show. we’ve never done it since and i’m not sure if we’ll ever be able to do it again, but it was certainly a special moment. the drama of the organ reveal was only topped by witnessing a stranger in a formal three piece suit performing “baby got back” by sir mix-a-lot at a karaoke bar after the show. he nailed it word for word.

Spoon are currently on the road, with headline dates booked across the west coast, midwest, and Canada along with festival appearances at Chicago’s Riotfest and the Seattle area’s Thing Festival.
