“Chaos, Charisma, and Unfiltered Energy”
Walking into the Ronda hall of TivoliVredenburg on a cold Monday night, I had no doubt that JPEGMAFIA ”aka Peggy”would bring the heat. What I didn’t expect was the sheer force of the experience: an hour and a half of controlled chaos, a masterclass in raw energy, and a testament to why he remains one of the most unpredictable and exciting live acts in hip-hop today.
The show opened with “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am a Thot” and within seconds, the entire venue felt like a battleground. The crowd erupted, bodies moving in every direction, and Peggy, draped in his usual DIY-meets-military aesthetic, took full command of the stage. There’s no hype man, no DJ, just him, a laptop, and an arsenal of beats that hit like gut punches.
“Lean Beef Patty ” and “HAZARD DUTY PAY!” came early, and they were nothing short of war cries. Seeing these tracks live, especially with Peggy’s unhinged delivery, was like watching someone teeter on the edge of madness and genius at the same time. He raps every bar like he’s trying to outrun his own breath, and somehow, he never falters.
Then came the wildcard moment of the night: a bizarre yet oddly brilliant cover of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”. If there’s one thing Peggy does best, it’s subverting expectations. Somehow, through distortion and autotune, he turned the sugar-coated pop hit into an anthem of his own, throwing the audience into both confusion and euphoria.
Throughout the set, there was no barrier between him and the crowd literally. He jumped all over the stage and in the face of the audience, all while delivering sharp, industrial beats with military precision. Tracks like “BALD!” and “Real Nega” kept the momentum sky-high, while his Danny Brown collabs ( “Steppa Pig” and “Garbage Pale Kids”) brought an extra dose of menacing swagger.
The energy never dipped. No moments of calm, no unnecessary breaks, just an unrelenting ride through JPEGMAFIA’s world. And when he closed with “Baby I’m Bleeding” and “Rainbow Six” it felt less like a farewell and more like an explosion.
