Prize Horse releases a new single, “Know Better,” the track is off their debut album, Under Sound, which arrives on February 16th via New Morality Zine. This month, Prize Horse will embark on a Midwest tour. kicking off on February 22nd in Minneapolis at 7th Street Entry.

“”Know Better” is one of my favorite tracks on the album but also the second to last, so I’m glad we’re able to spotlight it as a single,” says Beitel. “My memory around writing this song is murky, but I do remember Jon and I having a blast while working it out. Classic example of us just rocking one out in the room together. This was a really special song to record, Corey had an awesome idea to strip back the drums for a part of the last section, and then we ran them through a big muff while I filtered it with the tone knob. Fun stuff.”

The Minneapolis band includes Prize Horse is made of Jake Beitel, Olivia Johnson, and Jon Brenner. Under Sound was recorded in Loveland, Colorado, with Corey Coffman (Gleemer). Departing from the grittier layers of their previous 2021 Welder EP, Under Sound encapsulates Prize Horse’s journey through airy soundscapes, delving into the emotional nuances of life’s rapid changes. In his lyrics, Beitel chooses a subtle approach to depict the challenges of life’s transformations poetically rather than directly. Consequently, he possesses the skill to craft imagery, leaving room for interpretation by the listener. He adeptly maintains a harmonious balance, blending mild harmonies with gently delivered lines that captivate the audience.

Musically, Prize Horse persists in utilizing thick bass lines and fuzzed-out guitars as the foundation of their songs, but they have integrated more nuanced sounds into their composition. Under Sound evidently draws inspiration from the band members’ favorite artists and contemporaries, yet it avoids mirroring those influences directly in its sonic presentation.
