Porches

After garnering critical acclaim with several successful records including, Ricky Music and All Day Gentle Hold – Porches is back with a new, explosive sound with Shirt out September 13 via Domino Records.

The synth-pop, alt-indie band hailing from New York, has released Shirt which promises more of the same exploratory sound and authenticity that fans know and love. The new record offers a tantalizing commentary of adolescence, memory, and the passing of time, with a lavish painting of opposites and the parallels of beauty and the grotesque.

Since its emergence in the early 2010’s – Porches has always delivered on sweet, introspective lyricism, and experimental textures and beats, but Shirt goes several steps further by creating a glittery and gritty rock album, where the listener is often put on a dissonant edge, but begging to hear more.

In the first track ‘Return Of The Goat,’ the initial composition feels bare, and there’s a strong sense of uncertainty and angst. The climax of the track has a moment of piercing audio feedback, transporting the listener to an empty stage staring into a void. It’s eerie and uncomfortable until the audio finally corrects and resolves, ending on a sweet note of triumph with lyrics that warn ‘be very careful.’

Porches’ Aaron Maine successfully presents what’s familiar and expected in an uncanny and somewhat lightly disturbed way in Shirt, by using traditional sounds of warm autotune, grungy (sometimes acoustic) guitars, punching baselines, unique percussion, and soft keys. Maine has taken all of these elements and saturated and mashed them up, creating a sense of anxiety around the unknown.

For fans of TOPS, Whitney, and Future Islands – Porches defies the confines of indie and pulls from all genres. Throughout each track, Maine builds tension several times in surprising ways and breaks it back down, while incorporating elements of heavier rock, indie rock, beats, folk, pop, and grunge, and effortlessly criss-crossing genres, and utilizing different styles and instruments entirely.

Maine is a master manipulator of energy and space and always leaves room for quieter moments, with clear inviting vocals, and sweet layerings of harmonies that feel close yet boundless.

Shirt is a departure from the easy listening that fans love, and challenges listeners in a more confrontational urgency and intensity, using sometimes uncomfortable and glitching instrumentation to contradict what is incredibly raw and clear, putting opposing forces together and hoping for a peaceful, beautiful outcome, and sometimes preferring fantasy over fiction.
