POP Montreal 2015 adds new artists to lineup
Most of the big time summer festivals are over. The air may still be thick and humid, but the nights are getting a little longer, and you can project movies on alley walls starting at 8:30 pm. That’s correct, the faint scent of autumn is upon us and like all good changes, the smell is sweet.
Before they announce the full line-up in a few weeks we have a few tastes of what is to come. Highlights include showcases by local label stalwarts Fixture Records and Psychic Handshake, a sure to sell out hometown show by Kaytranada, the return of Born Ruffians, Motörhead, and Anthrax.
Art POP, Film POP and POP Symposium enthusiasts will comb through thrift shops to figure out what to wear for the advance screening of K8 Hardy’s new film, Outfitumentary (2010-2012 / 2015 | 90 min). The New York artist and founding member of the queer feminist journal and artist collective LTTR documents in her film what she wore almost every day between 2001 and 2012; capturing how we transition over time. She will also discuss her creative practice and career during a separate one-off, hour-long interview. Film POP is also presenting the World Premiere of Des jeunes gens mödernes, a French documentary that traces the genesis and the evolution of post punk, cold wave and novö scene. The screening will be followed by live performances from Police des moeurs and Xarah Dion!
POP Montreal is teaming up once again with the youth organization LOVE (Leave Out Violence) to design and install a large-format art piece on the exterior of the festival’s headquarters building “POP Quarters”. The collaborative artwork, which will be unveiled on September 16, is the result of a two week workshop led by Montreal street artist Miss Me and eight youth participants from LOVE. Together, they have created Pillars, a larger-than-life wheatpaste mural inspired by five real-life superheroes and the values they represent.
