Pegg is the musical project Xander Duell, a frequent collaborator with numerous artists, including Amen Dunes (which features Xander’s brother Damon), Weyes Blood, Modest Mouse and Van Dyke Parks (whose ornate orchestrations grace some of Pegg’s forthcoming material). The debut LP of Pegg project is the product of a series of sessions recorded at the River Church in upstate New York including producers Bartees Strange and Alew Dowling, Teeny Lieberson (Sleater-Kinney, Sharon Van Etten, TEEN), Blake Fusilier (aka Fusilier), Brandon Buz Donald (Kelela, L’Rain, Standing on the Corner), Arone Dyer (Buke and Gase), and well known R&B musician Jon Bap aka Maurice II.

Ahead of the release of Pegg Project, Pegg is sharing the latest single from the record, a ballad entitled “Via Dolorosa,” the track is accompanied by a video featuring a dramatic aging special effect courtesy of Stella Sensel’s makeup and Kate Fry’s costumes. To mark the release Pegg will be performing at a 3 day multi-disciplinary release event called A Wake At The River Church that will take place in September at The Brick in Brooklyn, featuring a six-piece Pegg band, a choir, and more

“Via Dolorosa” comes from the more contemplative b side of Pegg’s debut, beginning with a piano and vocal arrangement that swells and warps over the course of the track, as layers of vocals and horns envelope Duell’s arresting vocal performance. It’s an arrangement with an organic feel, almost feeling improvised in places, which feels fitting for a song Duell wrote in a stream-of-consciousness trance.

“I had to go back later to figure out what the words meant and what the chords were. It includes the word ‘shibboleth’ which I did not consciously know when I wrote the song. ‘Via Dolorosa’ uses it correctly, so it really added to the feeling like I channeled this one rather than created it.”
