Growing Stone, is the project of Taking Meds vocalist/guitarist Skylar Sarkis, recently announced his new full-length, Death of a Momma’s Boy, will drop on June 28th via Near Mint. Ahead of the album’s arrival, he has shared the single “No Substitute.” Growing Stone has also announced a Brooklyn, NY show with John Galm (Snowing) and Me in Capris, slated for August 31st at Hart Bar. “No Substitute” follows leads single “The Keep.”

Sarkis discussed the new song, saying:

“This is the most traditional love song I’ve ever done with Growing Stone. It doesn’t really deviate from the subject of adoration. I was listening to a LOT of Billy Bragg at the time, which I think comes through in the song. I feel like in pop music, the traditional way to write a love song is to make everything superlative; the love is worthy of any sacrifice. Billy Bragg does this, but you can always tell that there’s a subtext of ‘isn’t this pathetic?’ It keeps it real, especially when it’s unrequited love. I don’t even think I did that here. I just wanted to write a really nice love song. It’s up to the listener to decide it’s pathetic.”

Recorded/produced by James Palko (who plays in Taking Meds and releases music as Jimmy Montague), Death of a Momma’s Boy finds Sarkis embracing singer/songwriter music and letting his lyrics take center stage. Growing Stone’s sound is inspired by the music of Smog, Mount Eerie, Arab Strap, or Sparklehorse.
